Marangu Route

Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate 1970m to Mandara Hut 2700m

After breakfast, you will meet your guides and transfer you to the Marangu gate. Your journey will start soon after complete formalities at the Marangu gate. Picnic lunch will be served on route before arrive at Mandara hut. You will take a short walk to the Maundi crater after arriving at the camp. Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara 2700m to Horombo Hut 3720m

Leave Mandara Hut . After breakfast, you may get the first view of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks if the weather will be clear. You will arrive at Horombo hut after 5 hours. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Horombo Hut 3720m (acclimatization day)

Today you will spend an extra day at Horombo hut for acclimatization. After lunch, you will have an opportunity to visit Zebra rocks. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut.

After breakfast, you will walk through moorland then alpine desert to Saddle between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The remaining time of day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut 4703m to Summit 5895m to Horombo 

After light breakfast, you will start your summit journey at 12:00 am or 1:00 am. Enjoy your special night by walking slowly (pole pole). You might be exhausted on the way up but never give up, just keep on going while drinking frequently. At Gilman’s Point 5,681m you will be able to spend a short time drinking tea/hot water. It will take 1 hour and a half from Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak. Congratulations! Enjoy your moment celebrate conquering the peak of Africa, After taking photographs to descend back to Kibo for short rest before descending to Horombo hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After the last breakfast on the mountain, you will descend about 5 to 6 hours back to Marangu Gate to collect your certificates. Our drivers will be waiting for you at Marangu Gate to take you back to your hotel or lodge in Arusha.
